FERTILITY TESTING FOR WOMEN

Whether you are beginning or continuing your fertility journey, our fertility center believes in comprehensive fertility testing prior to beginning any fertility treatment. As infertility impacts males and females differently, and at times there are unknown factors that contribute to infertility, the AFMC Care Team strives to place you at the most accurate start of your fertility journey. Comprehensive fertility testing is offered to both males and females experiencing infertility or interested in understanding their current and future conception options.

ANTI-MULLERIAN HORMONE (AMH) TEST

Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) is a protein hormone produced by cells within the ovarian follicles. An AFMC physician will be able to test the level of the hormone within the blood to estimate the number of follicles inside the ovaries, and accordingly, the female patient’s egg count. If the Pre-Diagnostic Test has not been administered recently, AFMC is able to administer the test.

LUTEINIZING HORMONE (LH) TEST

Luteinizing Hormone (LH) is a gonadotrophic hormone that is produced and released in the anterior pituitary gland. The Luteinizing Hormone’s role in the control in the function of ovaries in females as the hormone causes the ovaries to release an egg during a female’s ovulation, as well as stimulate progesterone to sustain a pregnancy. An AFMC physician will conduct the LH Test to determine if there is a potential hormone imbalance. If the Pre-Diagnostic Test has not been administered recently, AFMC is able to administer the test.

ESTRADIOL (E2) TEST

Estradiol (E2) is one of two within the 2 major biologically active estrogens in nonpregnant females. Specifically, E2 plays an essential role in a female’s reproductive system as it is necessary for the development of the female’s reproductive system. The E2 test is administered by an AFMC physician as females tend to have higher amounts of E2 during their reproductive years, which decreases as a female nears menopause. If the Pre-Diagnostic Test has not been administered recently, AFMC is able to administer the test.

PROGESTERONE (P4) TEST

Progesterone (P4) belongs to a group of steroid hormones called progestogens. The P4 hormone plays a vital role in a female’s pregnancy as the hormone does the preparation of the uterus to support a fertilized egg, as well as the maintenance of the early stages of pregnancy. An AFMC physician will conduct a P4 Test to measure the overall P4 levels in the blood. If the Pre-Diagnostic Test has not been administered recently, AFMC is able to administer the test.

THYROID STIMULATING HORMONE (TSH) TEST

The Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) is produced by the pituitary gland and tells a person’s thyroid to release the thyroid hormone into the blood. An AFMC physician conducts the TSH Test to measure for any potential abnormal thyroid function and if a thyroid disease may be the cause of infertility. If the Pre-Diagnostic Test has not been administered recently, AFMC is able to administer the test.

FOLLICLE STIMULATING HORMONE (FSH) TEST

The Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) is essential to the function of a female’s ovaries as the hormone stimulates the growth of eggs in the ovary and increases as the egg releases during ovulation. The FSH Test is done to check the level of the hormone in the blood to determine a potential cause of infertility. If the Pre-Diagnostic Test has not been administered recently, AFMC is able to administer the test.

SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE (STD) TEST

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are passed through orally, vaginally, or anally during unprotected intercourse. An AFMC physician conducts an STD Test as some of the most common STDs have the potential to cause infertility. If the Pre-Diagnostic Test has not been administered recently, AFMC is able to administer the test.

SEMEN ANALYSIS

A Semen Analysis is conducted to evaluate and measure the quantity and quality of the fluid released during ejaculation. The analysis is done to examine the liquid portion, called semen or seminal fluid, and the moving cells called sperm microscopically. An AFMC physician will conduct the analysis to measure the volume and viscosity of the semen, as well as sperm count, concentration, and motility.

ULTRASOUND

Ultrasounds are an essential part of each patient’s infertility testing process and fertility treatment. The overall goal of an ultrasound is to provide the AFMC Care Team information of the female’s ovaries and reserves; endometrial lining; uterus and uterine lining; as well as the fallopian tubes. As the female patient is within the fertility treatment journey, ultrasounds will be utilized in different methods depending on the chosen treatment. If the Pre-Diagnostic Test has not been administered recently, AFMC is able to administer the test.
