The Goal
Intrauterine insemination (IUI), commonly referred to as artificial insemination, is a fertility treatment aimed at facilitating conception. The procedure involves the direct insertion of sperm into a woman’s uterus during her ovulatory period. Before the procedure, the sperm undergoes a specialized process known as “sperm washing,” which selects the most motile and viable sperm, enhancing the chances of fertilization.
The timing of IUI is crucial and is typically coordinated with the woman’s natural cycle, often with the aid of ovulation-stimulating drugs. This ensures that the sperm is introduced at the optimal moment for fertilization when the egg is present in the uterus. IUI is considered a less invasive and more affordable alternative to in vitro fertilization (IVF) and is often chosen by couples experiencing unexplained infertility, mild male factor infertility, or issues like cervical mucus problems.
The simplicity and lower cost of IUI compared to other assisted reproductive technologies make it a preferred first step for many couples seeking to overcome fertility challenges.
