Two donor-assisted treatment paths
How Donor Eggs and Donor Sperm May Be Used
Egg and sperm donation can offer individuals and couples a path to parenthood when they cannot conceive with their own eggs or sperm.
Egg Donation
Egg donation involves a woman donating eggs for assisted reproduction such as IVF. After hormonal stimulation and egg retrieval, the eggs may be fertilized in the laboratory or frozen for future use. Resulting embryos may be transferred to the recipient or a gestational surrogate.
- Egg donors are typically 21 to 35 years old
- Donors undergo physical, genetic and psychological screening
- Donation may be anonymous, known or, where allowed, semi-anonymous
Sperm Donation
Sperm donation involves a donor providing semen for fertility treatment. The sample is processed in a laboratory to concentrate healthy sperm and may be used immediately or stored for future treatment.
- May be used with IUI or IVF
- Donors are screened for infectious diseases, genetic disorders and general health
- Donation may be anonymous or known
