In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a fertility treatment where eggs are retrieved from a woman’s ovaries, fertilized by sperm in a lab, and then transferred to the uterus to help achieve pregnancy.

The Goal

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is an advanced fertility treatment designed to assist couples facing difficulties in conceiving naturally. Unlike Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), which involves the direct insertion of washed sperm into a woman’s uterus, IVF is a more complex and involved process.

IVF begins with the stimulation of the ovaries using hormonal medications to encourage the development of multiple eggs. This is monitored closely through ultrasound and blood tests. Once the eggs are mature, they are retrieved in a minor surgical procedure using a needle guided by ultrasound through the vaginal wall.

The retrieved eggs are then fertilized in a laboratory setting using sperm that has been prepared through a similar washing process as used in IUI. This increases the chances of fertilization by selecting the most motile and healthy sperm. The sperm can be introduced to the eggs by conventional mixing or injecting a single sperm into each egg, known as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).

After fertilization, the embryos can grow in a controlled environment for several days. One or more embryos are then selected and transferred to the woman’s uterus, hoping that they will implant and lead to a successful pregnancy.

IVF is particularly beneficial for couples dealing with severe male infertility, blocked fallopian tubes, or other issues where IUI may not be effective. It also offers the possibility to use donor eggs or sperm if needed and can facilitate genetic screening of embryos for hereditary conditions before implantation.

Given the complexity and higher costs associated with IVF, it is often considered after less invasive methods like IUI have been tried. IVF tends to have higher success rates per cycle compared to IUI, making it a vital option for many who have struggled with infertility.

The goal of IVF is to allow a patient the opportunity to become pregnant using her own eggs or donor eggs and sperm from the female’s partner or a donor. IVF is the most successful treatment a patient can do using their eggs and sperm (or donor sperm). By moving to IVF treatment, a couple dramatically increases their chances of success.
