Low testosterone or low T is defined as a testosterone level below 300 nanograms per deciliter. A normal range for total testosterone is between approximately 300 and 1,000 nanograms per deciliter. A low testosterone diagnosis is generally made when patients fall below the normal range. A blood test is required to get an accurate measure of a man’s testosterone level. Low testosterone may cause a decrease in sperm count and infertility.
Common symptoms of low T include low sex drive and the inability to achieve or maintain an erection. Other symptoms can include low energy, increased irritability, decrease in body hair, and decline in muscle mass.
